- Adherence
- Value of several existing joining forces between a dry film and the substrate it is found on. It is usually measured through traction or grid tests.
- Bleeding
- The diffusion of a coloured substance taken from the substrate through the film or the coating that produced a change in colour
- Charge
- A powder substance, practically insoluble in its medium which is normal white or shlightly coloured, with an refraction index usually lower than 1,7 used for tis physical or chemical properties.
- Coat
- Continuosus film of a product obtained throught on application.
- Colour
- Sensation resulting from visual perception of a radiation with a set spectral composition.
- Colour Metera
- Photometric device for measuring colour.
- Covering Power
- The ability of a paint to hide, through opacity, the colour or differences in colour of a substrate.
- Density
- Mass per unit of volume. Usually expressed in g/cm3 or kg/dm3.
- Diluent
- Simple or composite product, usually volatile in normal dry conditions which, no being a solvent of the fixed substance can be.
- Drying
- The group of transformation that give rise to the charge in state of the film of a coating, from liquid to solid.
- Drying time
- The period of time it takes from applying a product until it reaches its dry state.
- Effluorenscence
- Formation of crystals on the surface of a film, usually coming from the substrate and carried to the surface due to a process of migration.
- Enamel
- A term used to call very hard, shiny ceramic coatings and used in paints terms to describle high gross, hard and smooth surface coatings.
- Flocculation
- Formation of agglomerates of particles of pigments in a dispersion or paints.
- Fogged
- The formation of a deposit over the surface of a film causing the loss of shine and/or brightness of the colour. It has a milky opal like appearance which develops on the film during the drying process due to the condensation of moisture and/or the precipitation of one of the solid components( blushing).
- Illuminant
- A source of energy that emits radiation whose quality is defined by its spectral distribution of energy in the interval of wavelengths capable of influencing the perception of the colour of objects.
- Lacquera
- Coating whose drying mechanism is usually through evaporation of solvents and is characterised by having a smooth hard finish ( for example: nitrocellulose paints).
- Lebeling
- Acting of a humed film. That help to get a flat and uniform surface and allows to not showing imperfections on the substract.
- Levelling
- The aptitude of a wet film that allows a uniform flat surface to be obtained and that allowns the irregularities of the substrate to be covered up.
- Light Solidity
- The capacity of the film of the coating or pigment to keep its colour when it is exposed to natural or artificial light with set characteristics and under specific conditions.
- Line Painting
- Application by brush of a paint following a specific line.
- Matt
- A term usually used to define the degree of surfaces with an value lower than 20% on a shine meter scale at an angle of 60º. For this level of shine, the use of an angle of 85º is recommended for greater precision.
- Metamerism
- The effect where two colours of differents spectral composition appear to be the same under a set illuminant but are different when seen with other types of light.
- Opacity
- The aptitude of a material to prevent light passing through it. In paint technology this is also known as "covering power" and the ability of the paint to hide colour of differences in colour in the substrate through its opacity.
- Orange skin
- Appearance of the surface of a film that is characterised by the presence of roughness similar to the texture or orange sking.
- Paint
- A pigmented product, liquid, paste or powder, that when it is applied to a substrate, forms an opaque film with protective, decorative or other specific properties.
- Pigment
- Substance, usually in the form of small particles, practically insoluble in their medium, used for their optical, protective or decorative properties.
- Production batch
- A set quantity that comprises a production unit in discontinuous processes.
- Pycnometer
- A device that is dimensionally calibrated and used to determine the specific weight or density of liquid products.
- Shirincage
- Parcial absortion of the film by the substract. That is appreciable basically by the differences of the gloss or texture. It colud be inmediately after the drying time of just a littele bit later.
- Single component polyurethane
- A single component product containing a prepolymer with free, fixed or reticulable isocyante groups respectively with ambient humidity at a set temperature or through heating to a set temperature.
- Splashing
- Application with a textures or dotted finish in order to cover up defects in the surface to be painted or to obtain a desired aesthetic effects through splashes of the product or using a different colour.
- Storage life
- The length fo time a product in its original sealed container and under normal storage condictions keeps in a good state.
- Substrate
- A surface on which the coating is to be applied.
- Touch up
- Correction of small areas with defects on previously painted films after a fixed line.
- Varnish
- A product which, when applied to a substrate, forms a solid, transparent film with protective and decorative properties and other specific technical specifications.
- Viscosity
- The resistance to flowing by a liquid expressed through the force required per unit of surface area to produce a gradient of velocity equal to the unit.
- Washability
- An aptitude of the dry film of a coating in order to clean dirt drom it ( dust, stains, prints, etc...) through washing and without damage.
- Wood dye
- Product containing transparent colourants or pigments in an organic or aqueous medium usually free of a fixed medium used for dying wood.
- Wood pore sealer
- Sealant, usually nitrocellular, especially formulated to fill in the pores of wood.
- Wood Protector
- Liquid solvent based product for the protection of wood containing biocides which, through impregnation by different methods, protects against organisms such as fungi, bacteria and xylophagous insects. Products used to eliminate the development of insects of xylophages wich, once established in the wood cause its destruction.
